"Sulfate" has become a buzz word in the world of beauty products. More and more, hair and skincare lines are advertising the removal of sulfates; but what does this mean? Simply put, sulfates are salts containing sulfur. They are also a powerful cleansing agent used in industrial cleaning. Doesn’t sound so bad, right? Think again. You wouldn’t wash your face with the same product you use to clean your car’s engine, would you? Well, if you are using a sulfate-containing cleanser, you are not too far off.
One sulfate commonly found lurking in most facial cleansers is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, or SLS. This harsh ingredient has been linked to skin dryness and irritation. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and its sister, Sodium Laureth Sulfate are not only proven skin irritants, they are also comedogenic, meaning they can clog pores and cause acne. In fact, some skincare professionals even suggest the ingredient may be linked to cystic acne. While chemicals such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate are not necessary in skin cleansers, they are usually used as a foaming agent.
Other chemicals commonly paired with sulfates are parabens, artificial fragrances and dyes. Parabens have been linked to breast cancer and, according to the Skin Deep cosmetic database, show high levels of toxicity. Artificial fragrances and dyes can also contribute to skin irritation and even promote skin inflammation. Just because a product looks and smells pretty, doesn’t mean it is good to your skin.
With sulfates, parabens, fragrances, and dyes contaminating some of the most popular skincare brands, how do we solve this scary skin dilemma? Check the bottle; become educated on what you are putting on your skin. Look for products that aren’t afraid to show what they’re really made of. Remember, simple ingredients mean smooth, clear, healthy skin.
Keeping this in mind, HappyMe has worked tirelessly to remove all sulfates, parabens, dyes and artificial fragrances from our line of products. We use natural acne fighters such as Lavender Oil and Willow Bark Extract to purify and calm skin without causing irritation. Harsh chemicals and synthetics are inessential for happy skin. When it comes to having fresh, vibrant skin, it’s best to keep it simple.
