We know the basics: pimples are brought on by clogged pores that often result in inflammation. We also know that adhering to a natural cleansing regimen can help balance and cleanse acne-prone skin. But what many of us do not know is the actual cause of those blemish-causing blocked pores. Here’s a hint: it is not a result of poor hygiene. While taking the necessary measures to properly treat and support skin will certainly improve your complexion and assist in clearing it, there is actually a much deeper cause of acne.
Studies show there are two main acne-causing culprits: hormones and toxins. Hormonal imbalances may often occur during puberty, menstrual cycles, and pregnancies, but can also appear for no reason at all. These blemish-inducing hormones are called androgens. Androgenic hormones create a rise in sebum production, which can result in oily skin – a fantastic place for acne bacteria to breed. Next, toxins released through the skin contribute to congestion. This happens when vital organs, particularly the liver, are working overtime. Unable to metabolize the many toxins in our systems, the body releases them through a secondary measure: our skin. Other studies suggest genetics can play a role in acne.
So what can we do to help? While some dermatologists may prescribe birth control pills or other means of hormone therapy, we at HappyMe prefer a more natural approach. Try adhering to a clean diet rich in zinc, vitamin A, and omega-3. Also, foods that are simple, unprocessed and free from chemicals may help ensure no spikes in hormones levels. Leafy greens, peppers, and organic proteins are best. Green tea is also said to help regulate androgen levels. To help flush out toxins and support healthy liver function, drink plenty of water, exercise regularly, and steer clear of alcohol and caffeine.
Remember healthy skin starts from the inside. Keep things simple, pure, and balanced and get happy skin from the inside-out.
